She was born into a family of an auto mechanic and a hairdresser, Eduardo Cruz and Encarna Sanchez.

Early Career
From a young age, Monica and her sister, Penelope Cruz, showed talent as dancers.
They both pursued dance professionally, with Monica studying traditional ballet and flamenco at The Royal Academy of Dance, while Penelope attended Spain's National Conservatory.
Monica's flamenco dancing skills led her to join Joaquin Cortes' dance group, where she worked for seven years.
However, in 2002, Monica decided to temporarily leave dancing and focus on her acting career.
